Algae are among the most important organisms on Earth as they produce 50% to 85% of the planet's oxygen. Trees perform this function as well, but because our beautiful world is made up of much more water than land, aquatic plants such as algae produce most of the global oxygen supply, a vital life source for all beings. Microalgae, more commonly known as phytoplankton, are found in both the benthic (sea floor) and littoral zones of oceans and rivers. As photosynthetic organisms, these plants play key roles in the ecosystems of oceans and are the basis of the marine food chain.
