In part 1 of 2 of Mike Olsen’s near-death experience, American pastor and former actor Mike Olsen shares how he died during lung transplant surgery and went to Heaven.
Mike had ministered among the Amish and Mennonite communities before moving to Louisville, Kentucky, US. Shortly after arriving, he developed severe allergies that worsened into bronchitis every year. In 2012, after an ice storm brought on pneumonia, his condition deteriorated rapidly. A pulmonologist diagnosed him with interstitial lung disease, and in January 2015, following a biopsy, Mike received devastating news.
He sat me down, and he said, “Mike, you have what’s called idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.” He goes, “I know it’s a big word, “idiopathic,” no known cause. “Pulmonary,” your lungs, and “fibrosis,” scarring.” And “So, what can we do about it?” I thought I was going to just take medicine or something. And he said, “No, it’s terminal.” “I’ll give you two years to live.” The doctor told Mike to get his affairs in order. There was no cure. Mike started a medication that slowed but didn’t halt the disease’s progression. Rather than grow bitter, Mike decided to make a difference.
I met with the mayor, and I said, “I want to bring awareness to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.” So he made September Pulmonary Fibrosis Awareness Month. I met with a congressman. I met with both sides of the aisle. I didn’t care as long as they listened to me. So, I met with a congressman, and then I met with Senator Rand Paul [Republican] and Senator Mitch McConnell [Republican].
Mike even met then Vice President Pence [Republican] and sang on stage with actor Dennis Quaid. A local news documentary about his journey won an Emmy Award— 35 years after Mike had given up his acting career in New York to enter ministry.
Mike was placed on a transplant list, but the wait stretched nearly five years as his condition worsened. One day, a woman who had prayed for Mike’s wife came to pray for him. She said, “On my way to your house, I had a vision of a pair of lungs coming down from Heaven and being placed into your chest.” She goes, “I know you don’t know me. You might think I’m a wacko weirdo,” but she goes, “That’s what I saw when I was praying on my way over here.”
Mike put the vision on a shelf but continued listening for God’s direction. Shortly after, while working in his art cabin, he heard God’s voice clearly. I hear the Lord’s voice. “You need to put that stuff up. You don’t have time.” I’m like, “I really got to get this done, Lord. But if You’re saying to put it up, I will.” So, I start packing it all up, and I’m coming out of the cabin. I can see my back door, and my wife goes, “Come in. Hurry up.” I go up into the house, and I could tell she’s shaking. She goes, “It’s the doctor from the transplant center, your lung surgeon. They found a pair of lungs for you.”
The transplant was meant to save his life. Instead, Mike says he died — and what happened next defied everything he expected. I was aware of my body going up towards the ceiling and then those rainbow swirling lights. They were angels, because I heard them singing, “Mike’s coming Home.” They were singing a song like a melody. It was like nothing I’ve ever heard before. And it’s like they were so excited that I was coming Home. Join us tomorrow for Part 2 of 2 of Mike Olsen’s near-death experience. (Imagine Heaven Podcast with John Burke)
