And that very instant, I was completely separated from my body. I was no longer aware of Brianna. American writer Brianna Lafferty shares how a medical crisis caused her heart to stop — and what she experienced beyond her body. Her near-death experience had a long lead-up. At age 10, she developed myoclonus dystonia, a rare neurological movement disorder that went undiagnosed for eight years. The condition brought involuntary muscle movements, non-epileptic seizures, nerve pain, anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and severe insomnia.
By her early 20s, Brianna regularly went two to three days without sleep. By April 2017, at age 25, she had exhausted treatment options and was told doctors didn’t know what else to try. Then she caught the flu— and her already depleted body began to shut down. I fought it for two or three weeks and just got more and more fatigued, more and more tired, and more and more confused. And at 2 am on April 27, 2017, my body gave out. Everything gave out. I had no more willpower. I had no more heart, no more energy. My body was literally empty of energy, and so my heart stopped. It gave out.
Right before that, I heard this big booming voice ask, “Are you ready?” And I had no idea what I was ready for, but I was like, “Well, something’s out there.” I didn’t hesitate to say yes. And that’s when I felt like really three hard pounds in my chest, and my heart stopped. And that very instant, I was completely separated from my body. I was no longer aware of Brianna. I was no longer aware of Earth or humanity or anything. And I was in this beautiful blackness—you think of blackness maybe being like scary or dark or something, but it was absolutely beautiful, loving, full of energy. Like every possibility, every beginning was there. Brianna met the Creator in this blackness— an ever-loving presence with no judgment. She had no body, only energy. Though she didn’t remember Earth, her consciousness knew something had changed.
I just had the thought, “Am I dead?” And out of this darkness, three monks appear. Don’t ask me why monks. I still don’t know, but I believe they’re Tibetan because they had the beautiful red robes with the gold. They’re sitting cross-legged, floating by, and just smiling with kind of this, if you only knew. They didn’t say anything, but they were kind of laughing at me. I didn’t feel judged or upset about it. I was just like, “Oh, OK. That’s curious.” And they floated back into the blackness. And right after that is where I went into a tunnel. And this tunnel was vibrant blue, like whitish blue. Just there’s nothing on Earth— I have searched for eight years to try to find something that is as vibrant blue as this— and I am going through it at supersonic speed, and there’s binary code all around me, and I can tell that the binary code is being downloaded into my soul. I couldn’t tell you how long even that felt. It felt like an instant and forever all at once.
Brianna then entered a completely white space with no floors, ceiling, or doors— only a pile of numbers on the ground. I remember picking up these numbers and throwing them up in the air like a child and saying, “No wonder you love creating,” because I realized the Universe was created in math.
Next, Brianna entered what she describes as the most fun part of her experience—a place where she got to play with reality. It was kind of reminiscent of Earth—there were buildings, there were other beings, there was machinery, utility poles, trees, and stuff like that. And I remember early on in this part of the experience; I saw these beings sliding down trees covered in snow. “That looks like so much fun. I want to do it… I don’t think I like snow.” And instantly I’m sliding down these trees covered in moss next to these other beings, and I have this realization: what if they like snow, but I don’t, and they’re sliding down next to me on what they want while I’m sliding down on what I want, and we’re experiencing these realities simultaneously together, but different.
Brianna spent what felt like months in this place, stocking shelves with beings, dancing choreographed routines, moving as one without ever speaking, and learning to fly. When I tried to learn to fly, I severed my arm on a utility pole. It came completely off in this experience. There was no pain. There was no fear. I was just like, “I wonder what’s going to happen.” I’m just looking at it. And then I see it reattached with binary code again, and I was like, “Oh, cool.” There was another part, which I still find so ironic, because at the beginning, I was like, I don’t think I like snow. Well, I ended up in like a snowman-like body. And I had the thought, I wonder what happens if I get too close to that flame. Well, instantly I’m under the flame, and I’m melted, and I’m a puddle of eyeballs. It was like, “Huh, wonder if anyone will put me back together.” And just like that, these other beings came and put me back together once again without saying anything.
Eventually, Brianna reached a barbed wire fence. Some beings crossed through, but she knew she couldn’t follow—what lay beyond was a higher frequency she wasn’t allowed to reach. Then I jumped into the last part of my experience, which was a very closed, tight room. And in front of me was this beautiful scroll. And behind me, I could feel the presence of seven powerful beings. In front of me, the scroll starts to get beautiful, sparkly golden script written on it. And that is when I suddenly remembered that I had this human experience. And with that came my human ego. And apparently, this knowledge was so great, I was like, “Ha, you’re showing this to a human.” And just like that, the script went away. The scroll rolled up, and I was instantly snapped back into my body.
When Brianna felt her heart start again, she panicked— convinced she’d been dead for two months. Her phone showed that only eight minutes had passed. When her mother arrived later that day, Brianna told her everything. She could suddenly hear plants, feel people’s pain, and hear their thoughts—abilities that initially overwhelmed her and plunged her into deep depression. She even took extreme measures to return, all unsuccessful.
Years later, after brain surgery for her condition, Brianna learned transcendental meditation and returned to the blackness without dying. There, she felt the ‘binary code’ from her near-death experience return—circulating through her brain and heart— and she believes it helped rewire her. She turned off her deep-brain stimulator—a device that had controlled her symptoms for years—and her symptoms never returned.
I now know how to connect with that space anytime. I’m constantly connected, and I am in such a trusting mode. It’s just like I let it go. I let it flow. And it’s like if I die tomorrow, I’m living my best life now, and I am so excited to go back. But I no longer am trying to go back, if you know what I mean. (The Paradigm Experience)
