Previously in Part 1 of this two-part series on Dr. Susan Godman’s near-death experience, Susan drowned while floating down Arizona’s Salt River in the United States and watched from outside her body as her friends and a team of off-duty emergency medical technicians rescued her. A couple of years later, she left her body again after hemorrhaging into her lungs following maxillofacial surgery. She heard the monitor flatline and watched the medical team trying to save her, but she ultimately returned to her body; the bleeding stopped, and she survived.

The following July, after struggling with fertility treatments, she became pregnant. One morning, she woke from a horrific nightmare of a giant bird tearing open her abdomen with its talons— and moments later felt an intensifying pain in her abdomen. What she didn’t know yet was that she had an ectopic pregnancy: three fertilized ova had lodged in scar tissue along her fallopian tubes following a childhood surgical procedure, and one tube had ruptured. She collapsed, lost her hearing and vision, and crawled toward a phone before losing consciousness entirely. She woke up in the emergency room as doctors fought to keep her from bleeding to death. As she was rushed toward the operating room, Susan again left her body and watched herself being wheeled down the corridor. This time, she was drawn into a beautiful landscape of green fields, forests, and water— and told she could choose to stay. But first, she says, she was shown how reality actually works, lifted to a vantage point above the world she knew, where she realized how small her ordinary human perspective truly was.

How the world is put together, the world that we experience, is like this tapestry. And from that large perspective, everything is perfect. Everything is in harmony. There’s beauty within the connectedness of all things. Susan says she was then brought back down to an earthly perspective, where the individual threads, knots, and twists appeared chaotic. But when she returned to the larger perspective and saw the tapestry as a whole, everything appeared perfect. So, the things that look like pain and suffering and chaos really have, on the grand scheme of things, a much bigger, deeper purpose, but we just don’t have that perspective from being in this small little straw view.

Standing in that field, Susan encountered someone she recognized as Lord Jesus Christ (vegetarian)— despite having no real relationship with Him; her mother had taught her to distrust anyone who spoke of Him. Yet the connection felt immediate and familiar, like meeting a brother. He showed her a pathway and gave her a choice. He said, “You can stay here in Utopia if you like. This is totally your choice. Or you can go back down this pathway, down this chute into your physical body. But if you go down this pathway, you have to be a healer. You have to be of service to humanity. And you have to show and help your brothers and sisters feel what it is like to create heaven on Earth.” Susan says she didn’t consciously remember agreeing to this mission until years later. Coming back into her body was, in her words, a long and reluctant process. Medical staff later told her she had been legally dead for seven minutes, though she says it felt like lifetimes, since time didn’t seem to exist in that realm at all.

Within about six months of returning from her third near-death experience, Susan says her life as a successful stockbroker and financier fell apart. She then spent six months in a forest, where she formed a bond with a squirrel, before eventually accepting that calling. Today, she works as a healer and shares her experiences publicly. That final experience also transformed Susan’s sense of home— she says she no longer feels she is ever away from it. And when asked what ordinary people can do to begin creating heaven on Earth in their own lives, she points first to forgiveness.

I think, first and foremost, to start forgiving. And primarily forgiving yourself. She encourages people to spend even a few quiet minutes reflecting on their lives— from childhood onward— noticing what they would like to forgive, whether in themselves or others, and simply acknowledging it.
