Rwanda and South Korea have signed an agreement to strengthen cooperation between their police forces in fighting cross-border crime. South Korea has launched its first commercial container voyage to Europe through the Arctic to test whether the Northern Sea Route can become a viable regular shipping corridor. In this multipart series on Aaron Goulding’s near-death experience, American truck driver and recent convert to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Aaron shares how a childhood brush with death led him into a mysterious realm where he encountered a Divine “Mother of Creation.” Aaron, a native Californian raised Christian in a family that never really practiced its faith, sensed even as a child that there was “more to the story” spiritually. At age 8, Aaron came down with what he understood to be pneumonia and spent two weeks in a Palm Springs hospital, where he says he was allowed nothing but intravenous fluids. Nurses drew his blood so often, sometimes twice by different shifts unaware of each other, that he began withering away.

Basically, the doctors told my mom they didn’t know why I was fading. There was nothing they could do, so basically, go say your goodbyes. She came in and gave me a last wish, basically, and I was like, “Food!” So she went out and brought me a stack of pancakes... And the doctors were so mad at her. Although Aaron says he felt better after eating the food his mother brought him, during those two weeks he had grown extremely weak and repeatedly drifted in and out of consciousness, entering what he describes as more of a dream state than a coma. During one of those periods, he found himself on the first of what would become a recurring journey— one he would revisit with greater clarity later in life.

The first time, it was just like the Light at the end of the tunnel. I was just traveling through this Light. When you see it, it’s like just real bright. And then it drops you at a tree. I started off at a tree, and it’s just like, all of a sudden, you’re at this tree, and everything is dark around you. I called it the glass house because right after you’re at the tree, and if you’re looking out, you see things shimmering, and it looks like glass, and you hear water. But all the senses were the same. That’s the hardest thing to explain, is the sense of everything is alive. You feel connected to everything, even the water, the tree. You know everything is everything – best way I can explain it.

So, I saw this, what would look like a city, or glass houses shimmering off in the distance. So, you’re kind of guided to it, because you’re in this dark area, and you don’t have a clue what’s going on. So, I kind of like gravitated towards that. And what I noticed was, the first time, was that my thought would guide me there. You hear the water, and you see the shimmering on the ground.

Everything was lighting up as you would step, so it would kind of guide you, almost like movie theater lights, where you’re being guided down a path. And then I would come up to a stairwell to what I call the Mother of Creation. I would say Father Time was there. But I met with the Mother first. It was definitely a Divine being. There were no facial features or anything, but it was also that shimmering kind of darkness, but it was like a Light being. These are things that make it really hard to explain. It was Divine in nature, [and had] a feminine attribute to it. It was like comforting. You felt like you were home. I sat and talked with Her for a while at the top of what seemed like a stairwell, where there was a bench. Everything had a structure, but it [didn’t]. It was like flowing and shimmering water is the best way I could describe it.

In Part 2, Aaron learns that despite feeling completely at home with the Mother of Creation, he is not allowed to stay. Years later, while sleeping alone in his truck, he would suddenly wake to find himself speaking with a mysterious woman.
