Previously in this multipart series on Aaron Goulding’s near-death experience, at age 8, Aaron became dangerously ill with what he understood to be pneumonia. Extremely weak and drifting in and out of consciousness, he found himself traveling through a brilliant Light into a strange, shimmering realm, where he encountered a Divine being he calls the Mother of Creation. Although Aaron felt completely at home there, the Mother told him it wasn’t his time and sent him back. In later years, Aaron says he returned to that same mysterious realm with greater awareness and control. He also says he never made it beyond the entrance of what he describes as a Celestial city. Despite being sent back, Aaron says the realm felt so much like home that he wanted to stay.

I didn’t want to come back; I wanted to stay, which is weird. I mean, you think about it, being a young child or even later in life when I’d gone there and had children of my own here— the feeling that you have there is like, you are home. The things of the Earth, you forget [them]. Most people would think that’s kind of odd. A lot of people grieve when they lose someone, but I felt like this was a celebration, like I’m home. It’s like, why can’t I go? Why? I don’t understand. What did I do wrong? Am I really that bad? That’s how my mind played with it when I was younger.

It was neat, though, because it was like at eight years old, so from that point on, I always felt like I had a guardian angel, or I had a belief in a higher power at a very young age. Like I said, I was raised Christian, but I [wasn’t] sure it was real. We didn’t really practice anything. I didn’t understand it. I didn’t fully understand it until I was eight: that there was an actual Creator of everything, and that they were watching me, that I was never alone. That’s kind of like that feeling I had: I was never alone. I could make it through anything, because they didn’t want me back there, basically. So, I felt invincible at that point. That belief followed him decades later into a season of family conflict and legal battles over his late grandparents’ estate, which finally pushed him to his knees in prayer.

I was being lied to, and I didn’t feel like my mom was on the right side of that either, because I couldn’t get any straight answers from a lot of people. After so many things [had] just surrounded me, I felt like the adversary was just all around me. I earnestly hit my knees to pray, and I was like, “GOD, I need truth. Where is the truth? Where’s the light at the end of this tunnel?” And literally 5 minutes later, I had missionaries knocking at my door. And I was like, “OK, GOD, I’m listening. I’m listening. Go ahead.” And then, from then on, I was baptized and changed my life around completely. Aaron says his conversion gave new meaning to the spiritual search he had been on for decades.

All things are brought together through GOD are good, as Romans 8:28. I wouldn’t have said that 20 years ago, because I was researching everything. I was at one point agnostic, or atheist, or Buddhist; I’ve been everywhere, down every rabbit hole. But, in the end, there is always, it comes back to the one, the one true GOD. As a recent convert to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Aaron says he had been studying its scriptures and found passages he believed reflected what he had experienced years earlier. And I found it, I'm positive I found it because what I’ve read in scriptures in this book is basically what I just talked about, written hundreds of years ago in their best ability that they could write it back then, that I couldn’t even do today.
