In this two-part series on Cliff Green’s near-death experience, Swedish educator Cliff shares how, as a four-year-old boy, he nearly drowned in a private swimming pool and found himself within a Light of total, unconditional Love— an experience that has quietly measured every day of his life since. Cliff was born in 1980 and grew up in Sweden. His parents were no longer together and by the time he was four, his mother was pregnant with another man’s child. That summer, Cliff was staying with his father, his brother, and his father’s girlfriend, Katarina, whom he describes as one of Sweden’s wealthiest women, on her private island. The island had a swimming pool, and Cliff was playing near it alone when he noticed an insect struggling in the water.
I was there close to the water, and I saw a little insect in the water, and I wanted to save the insect. So, I tried to grab it, but when I did that, I felt a little push, and suddenly I fell in the water. So, I really tried to swim and tried to get up, but I panicked. And in the panic, you don’t think. You just do all that you can do just to stay above water. It was very intense. It was very stressful. So, I could just feel the intensity around the mouth, because I was really fighting for my life to get a breath. But it was just full of water, and so I guess I was getting it into my lungs, so I was suffocating from the inside.
I just didn’t know what to do. I was crying for help underwater, but then I heard a voice, and the voice said to me, “Ge upp”—which means “give up, surrender, and let go.” And it was not just that the voice was somebody yelling. It was like it came from the inside and from the outside. It was like the voice was penetrating everything at the same time. And the voice was so full of trust, and the voice [told me] just to let go, and I was safe. That’s how I felt. The moment he surrendered, the drowning gave way to something entirely different.
Suddenly, I just saw a Light, a strong Light, and it was not strong like it hurt my eyes; it was just [for me] to recognize the Light. I saw the Light, and then suddenly I was in the Light. I was the Light. And this Light is— it’s just beautiful. It’s just wonderful. You don’t need anything. You don’t want anything. You’re just fulfilled. There is no lack of anything. And I can see that I don’t have any breath, I don’t have any body, but I don’t know where I end or where I start. I’m just part of this Light. I am totally this Light. There is no longing for anything. I’m just at peace. There are no thoughts. There is nothing. It’s just total stillness in this energy, Love, [and] Light.
In Part 2, Cliff shares what his brother later told him about his return from the Light— and why coming back left him searching throughout his life for the same overwhelming Love and beauty. It’s like I’m always looking for that same experience while I’m living. It’s [like], “Where is it?” Because it’s like after coming back from that, it’s an emptiness. It’s like I’d rather be there than be here, because here you can’t experience so much Love and beauty. Join us tomorrow for Part 2 of Cliff Green’s near-death experience.
