A 10-second single-leg balance test may help assess muscle strength, coordination and fall risk, particularly among older adults. Research found 54% of adults aged 71–75 failed the test. Experts caution it cannot diagnose conditions or measure biological aging. Walking, leg-strengthening exercises and balance training may improve stability and help preserve independence (VnExpress)
A new paper in The Lancet Regional Health – Southeast Asia links air pollution and chemical exposure as among multiple factors in rising diabetes and cardiovascular disease cases in South Asia. Fine particulate matter [PM2.5] may promote inflammation, insulin resistance, and blood vessel damage, while hormone-disrupting chemicals like PFAS [per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances] may worsen metabolic health. Researchers call for stronger pollution controls and environmental monitoring (FirstPost)

British animal-people advocacy organization Project Slingshot has released Gaslit: The Hidden Truth About Salmon Farming in the UK, a short documentary that examines animal-people welfare concerns and environmental damage linked to the industry. The film accompanies an “End Salmon Farming” campaign, promoted through thousands of advertisements across the London Underground, the city’s subway network. Separately, Animal Equality, an international animal-people protection organization, has called for stronger oversight, citing 35 million premature salmon-person deaths reported by raising operations over three years (Plant Based News)

Climate-driven heat stress is the biggest threat. Most reefs have not yet been lost, leaving a window for emissions cuts, stronger protection and restoration to help prevent their collapse (DW)

Previously in Parts 1 and 2 of this three-part series on Kevin Mohatt’s near-death experience, the Arizona real estate agent and lifelong ice hockey player recalled a cardiac arrest on Valentine’s Day 2022. After briefly waking in the intensive care unit with his wife beside him, he was sedated again and later recovered enough to return home. A week after his cardiac arrest, he visited his rescuers at their fire station. There, closing his eyes brought back vivid memories of what he had experienced while they worked to revive him: watching the rescue from above, being surrounded by Light, and receiving his late mother’s message, “Not yet. Not yet.” Now, in Part 3, the conclusion of this series, Kevin reflects on his mother’s message and describes the neurological examinations that followed his cardiac arrest. He also shares the physical and financial hardships he faced during recovery, and how an unexpected call from a former client helped restore his hope. Kevin could not explain why his mother had been the one to communicate with him. Yet remembering her message brought back the comfort she had given him as a little boy.
And every time I look at it, and every time I revisit it, it always goes back to my mother. Just that loving voice that she always had when she would just kind of comfort me as a little boy, it was just, “Not yet. Not yet.” Doctors examined Kevin’s brain for possible damage following his cardiac arrest. He says they found evidence of old hockey concussions. During one brain scan, he deliberately concentrated on his memory of the Light. That Light that I experienced literally showed up in one of the scans as a memory part. Later, while looking at the scan results with his neurologist, Kevin asked about an area that appeared bright white. He says she identified it as a brain region associated with sensory experiences or memory and explained that he had been recalling something intensely. She did not yet know about his near-death experience. When Kevin told her he had been remembering the Light, he says his account moved her to tears. And she just couldn’t believe it; she goes, “Normally, that’s a kind of a low yellow to an orange [light].” And she [said] mine was bright white. And she said, “Yes, it’s real.” And I said, “You mean you got a picture of it?” She said, “It appears so.”
Kevin’s survival was followed by prolonged hardship. He says about a quarter of the left side of his heart had died. Over the following months, his leg muscles wasted away until he needed walkers and a cane. Unable to continue working as before, he and his wife, who had recently come through cancer, faced financial devastation. A nurse later compared his return from the Light to being reborn, and Kevin says many cardiac arrest survivors call the anniversary their “rebirth day.” He longed to return to the peace he had experienced but felt ashamed because that would mean leaving his family. One day, after falling and becoming stranded on his stairs, he struggled back to his bedroom in severe pain and despair. There, his phone rang. A former client needed him to sell a house. Kevin listed it, received a full-price cash offer within days, and completed the sale 14 days later.
I was financially destitute, and all of a sudden, I sell a US$600,000 house. And I’m like, “What just happened?” And I mean to tell you, from that day forward, I rejoiced. And I realized that I was having a major pity party, and I needed to just start having faith. And by having faith, it produced hope. Pain or not, it produced hope. Right that day, I flipped a switch. And now that’s why I’m sharing my story, because I want everybody to know, [if] you’re on your last rope, you got hope. You got to have faith. Kevin says an artery supplying his heart has since become blocked again, but his approach to life has changed. On the morning of his cardiac arrest, he and his wife had argued, and he left to play hockey without saying “I love you.” He resolved never to let that happen again. Kevin no longer fears death. He believes the Light he experienced was GOD and describes pain as a sense of distance from that Light.
I believe in my heart, and with the deepest conviction that I can— you could never shake me from it— is that GOD is Love. Love is what it felt like when I died. I felt a sense of peace in this overwhelming warm baby blanket of Love. Kevin shares his story to give hope to others. He tells those who doubt him to keep seeking, and he tells everyone that faith is where peace is found. (Brad Peterson YouTube channel - Thank you)
