Aligned with its national efforts to enhance sustainable development, Malaysia’s Green Building Index (GBI) was launched in 2009. The GBI is based on other international rating systems, such as BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Enviromental Design). The GBI evaluates structures according to a set of criteria, which includes resource use efficiency in the areas of energy, water and materials. As an example, points are given to a building for the installation of solar energy systems or water conservation via rainwater harvesting.
