Have you ever considered whether what you put on your body might be just as important as what you put in your body? Today, we would like to introduce to you how to make your own vegan cosmetics, enabling you to experience the joy of making things yourself while promoting a cruelty-free, chemical-free lifestyle. This not only boosts your confidence from the inside out but also contributes to your overall well-being.

First, it is important to be aware that many commercial cosmetics labelled as vegan do not contain any animal-derived ingredients but may have been tested on animal-people. Conversely, some cruelty-free cosmetics are not tested on animal-people during production but might still contain animal-derived ingredients, such as honey, beeswax, castoreum, carmine, collagen, lanolin, pearl extracts, and more.

Humane Society International, Shining World Compassion Award recipient and a Shining World Protection Award laureate, estimates that about half a million animal-people around the world undergo cruel and inhumane experiments to test the safety of cosmetics each year. Some of the most common tests include forcibly rubbing chemicals onto shaved skin and dripping chemicals into the eyes of constrained animal-people.

One way to ensure that our products are vegan and cruelty-free is to make them ourselves. By using natural, plant-derived ingredients, we can easily and economically make our own cosmetics that we can be assured are safe and healthy to use. Moreover, we have the flexibility to customize them to meet our individual preferences and suit our skin type.

Knowing our skin type helps us decide what is right for our skin and maintain its health. Now we will focus on normal skin types.

Let’s start with a vegan facial cleanser. Here is an easy and simple combination. We need a 100 milliliters glass container or a spray bottle to store it. The ingredients are 50 grams of castile soap, 15 grams of jojoba oil, 30 grams of rose water, and three to five drops of lavender essential oil. After placing all the ingredients in the bottle, close it and shake it well. Now it is ready to use.

You may use coconut oil to make a vegan facial cleanser. Add 15 grams of baking soda to a jar with half a cup of warm coconut oil. Mix it well, then add a few drops of lavender essential oil. That’s all we need to make a vegan facial cleanser from three simple ingredients.

Let’s now make some moisturizing vegan body cream. Put one third cup of coconut oil into a glass container with a half cup of shea butter. Now, use a hand mixer to mix them for about one minute. After well-combined, add 30 grams of almond oil, 15 grams of vitamin E oil, and a few drops of an essential oil of your choice, use a spoon to stir them thoroughly so that the oils move to the bottom of the container and to prevent splashing from when we use the hand mixer again. To have better consistency, use a hand mixer to ensure all ingredients are well-combined. Then, to store the body cream we can transfer it into a small glass container with a lid. This is now a thick moisturizing vegan body cream.

To make a vegan aloe vera toner, you need 120 grams of aloe vera gel and a few drops of lemon essential oil. Aloe vera is a medicinal plant known to reduce dental plaque, accelerate wound healing, and prevent wrinkles. We need a blender to blend the gel into a smooth consistency. Then add a few drops of lemon essential oil. This helps to preserve the toner for up to two weeks.

Rosewater toner can be made in a minute; we just need one cup of rosewater and few drops of lemon essential oil. Mix both ingredients and pour into an air-tight container. To lengthen the use of the rosewater toner, you can consider storing it in the refrigerator.

Now, let’s make an all-natural vegan lip balm. We need a heat-safe glass cup. Put four grams of candelilla wax, 15 grams of shea butter, and 10 grams of coconut oil into a heat-safe glass cup. Then place the glass cup in a pot for a water bath that covers just the ingredients. Place the pot with the lip balm ingredients onto a stove top and allow them to melt slowly at a low heat while stirring gently until the mixture becomes clear and smooth. Next, remove the glass cup from the water bath then add three drops of sweet almond oil, five drops of castor oil, and three drops of sweet orange essential oil to create a pleasant, sweet aroma. Use a stirring rod to mix it well, and then pour it into a shallow tin or lipstick tube for storage. We can pop it into the freezer for three minutes to quickly solidify the lip balm for immediate use but be cautious as to not leave it any longer, as it might cause the tube to crack.

We may vary this recipe by using slightly different ingredients. For this recipe we can use four grams of candelilla wax, 18 grams of shea butter, 10 grams of sweet almond oil and a few drops of tea tree oil or an essential oil of your choice. The process to create this lip balm is the same as the previous recipe for lip balm.

Here are some natural homemade vegan lip balms. Apply vegan lip balm before going out in the sun or wind to prevent dryness, cracking, and irritation to your lips. These balms can also be used as a hand moisturizer.

Our Beloved Supreme Master Ching Hai (vegan) has explained the karmic retribution that can result from animal-people testing, which includes using or selling cosmetics that have been tested on animal-people.

“We will have to partake in this kind of bad karmic action. More or less, we will have to also pay. It won’t be good for us in the long run if the cosmetic product involved suffering of any kind. […]

If we make the animal-people suffer in any form at all, we have to pay, no matter under what form of cosmetic we translate it into – soap, detergent, perfume, whatever. If anything involves animal-people suffering, we must pay – the user, the producer, the seller, all the same, we must pay in one way or another, more or less. It depends.

“I hope that people will stop mistakenly thinking that animal-people are food, skin, fur, or mere economic resource or cosmetic substance, but to receive the full blessings that they so freely give. And by doing all this benevolent change into a vegan diet, we will really save the planet and all lives on Earth.”

We are confident these vegan cosmetics formulations we have shared will inspire your creativity. You can prepare them as needed and customize them as desired. At the same time, we appreciate your commitment to using only environmentally responsible and animal-people friendly ingredients, contributing to a more just and peaceful world.
