Mushrooms are known for their distinguished structures, including a stem and cap. Mushrooms do not belong to the plant or animal kingdom in the taxonomy of biology. Instead, they belong to their own fungi kingdom.

The mycelium of a fungus serves an important function, which works very much like the root system of plants. In a way, fungi are like a natural recycling center. In addition to reducing environmental pollution, mycelium has great commercial value and makes the entire ecosystem more sustainable at the same time. Furthermore, particle board, wall tiles, and building blocks can even be made of mycelium, with the additional benefit of being highly biodegradable.

According to Paul Stamets, an American mycologist and entrepreneur, “mushrooms are miniature pharmaceutical factories, and of the thousands of mushroom species in nature, our ancestors and modern scientists have identified several dozen that have a unique combination of talents that improve our health.” Mushrooms contain a variety of nutrients, including antioxidants, protein, vitamins and minerals that are known to be beneficial to our well-being.

Why are mushrooms considered superfoods and a wonderful alternative to animal-people meat? Apart from the “meaty” texture and the umami flavor that makes it a good candidate to add to pasta sauces, stews, casseroles and many other dishes, mushrooms are healthy and nutritious. Shiitake mushrooms, for example, are native to East Asia and are known to help the immune system and to protect the heart. Mushrooms are a good source of B vitamins, including riboflavin, niacin, and pantothenic acid.

It’s wonderful to know that mushrooms can make so many positive impacts on our health, and what’s even more exciting is that growing edible mushrooms can also be easily done at home. One of the greatest things about cultivating mushrooms is that it does not take up much space, and there are hundreds of species to choose from. If you’re a beginner or looking for a method to save you some time, a mushroom growing kit might be the perfect choice for you. If your grow kit is for oyster mushrooms, you might be able to harvest the first batch in two weeks. Now, let’s go through a summary of the cultivation process. Lastly, remember to wash them before you cook or eat them.
