Thoughtful quote of the day: “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players: they have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts, his acts being seven ages.” – William Shakespeare Legendary English Poet and Playwright (BrainyQuote)
Previously, in Part 1 of 2 of Kieran Mace’s near-death experience, Kieran described how he was struck by a car at age five and rushed to the hospital with devastating injuries. As doctors fought to save his life, he found himself standing outside his body, walking through the hospital corridors unseen by anyone around him. Drawn toward a strange room at the end of the ward, he sensed a vast unseen presence and was suddenly thrust across the Universe— seeing planets, cities, and distant places before encountering an ancient intelligence that flooded his mind with overwhelming knowledge about the interconnectedness of everything.
Terrified and unable to comprehend what was happening, the five-year-old cried out for his mother— and was suddenly pulled back into his body. At first, Kieran assigned the experience to a dream or hallucination from trauma. But weeks later, when he was stable enough, a kind nurse offered to take him for a ride around the pediatric ward in a wheelchair. As they traveled down the corridors, Kieran began to recognize everything.
I went down the first corridor with her, and I began to realize that’s the kid I saw in the dream. As we approached the doorway, it matched the kid that I saw before. The same injuries. He was even wearing the same clothes. I went to the next room. I saw the other kid. I saw the doctor that walked past me in this experience. And at that point, I remember my heart racing and the nurse being confused like, “Why is he getting scared of what’s going on?” And I eventually realized that I knew where to go. So, I told her, “OK, go down this corridor, turn left, go down this corridor, turn right.” And eventually, I found the room where I met this entity. We went towards this security section, and I could just about peek through the glass in this door where we couldn’t go further, and I realized that the room that I was in, I saw it through this window. It matched. It was the morgue.
The realization was deeply unsettling. Kieran experienced what psychologists call ontological shock— the understanding that the reality he thought he knew might not be what it seemed. The nurse, seeing his panic, took him away.
In the following weeks, Kieran realized he was different. One morning, he felt an overwhelming obsession to create art. All I could feel again was that physical pain. It just wouldn’t stop. The moment this lady came over to me to give me a pen and some paper and I started to draw. I didn’t even know what I was drawing. The moment I began to draw, I realized that the pain was seeping away. It was kind of like it was a bloodletting of pain. And I drew furiously and furiously and furiously. And I asked for more paper and more paper and more paper. And it seemed to be from this experience that I just became incredibly artistic. Previously, I wasn’t. I realized my brain was working faster than it was before. I had all these new thoughts that I didn’t have before.
The doctors had prepared Kieran’s mother for the possibility that he would never walk again and might have brain damage. Thankfully, neither came to pass. Kieran eventually left the hospital and began a relatively normal childhood.
Two years later, Kieran’s friend took him swimming for the first time at a place called Hinksey Pools on the outskirts of Oxford. They traveled through a network of paths called the Devil’s Backbone. As Kieran walked up some steps and reached the top, he had a strange feeling.
I saw the train yard that I saw in this experience, this near-death experience. That matched perfectly. As I walked to the end of this bridge and saw the steps leading down, there was the lake that I landed at, the lake that I seemed to have startled these people on the bridge. All the little details were the same. The metal chamber fences were the same. The cracks were there that I knew. The water was vast, and it was there, and that was my second experience of ontological shock. Because the years had passed, I was living a relatively normal-ish life. It was then that I was reminded once again that I survived without my body. My consciousness survived without this physical body.
The experience transformed Kieran’s understanding of existence and opened abilities he never had before.
I was taught at school that consciousness seems to sit within the mind, the soul may be in the heart, that this body is all that we are. Over the years, I’ve sat with this knowing that consciousness isn’t situated here. And I like to think of like we’re all radios, really. We receive a signal from somewhere and then translate that signal into something, maybe music, voice, our personality, whatever it is that makes us who we are. And I’ve lived that question. Where is this consciousness coming from? Who are we? What are we channeling, really? And despite this tremendously awful start in life, I’ve had this ability following this as well, not just artistic. I’ve come to accept that I’m now a medium. I’ve been ever since that day. I’ve had this additional perception in life where my gut instincts seem to align perfectly in many different situations.
Despite this, I’ve come to accept that’s who I am. Be at peace with myself and the fact that I’m never going to fit in. But I’m here really just to share a message that we are so much more than the sum of our literal parts and that a kid can overcome tremendous trauma and come back with positives. I’ve had this wonderful career because of this ability that I have. I don’t think I would be where I am now without it. And also, my greater understanding of life has afforded me maybe a more forgiving view in the world and view of people and their struggles and their limitations. (NDE Journey)
