There are many other transparent animals in the ocean including the sea salp, glass sponge, transparent sea cucumber, ghost shrimp, glass squid, glass octopus, transparent-headed barreleye fish, juvenile surgeonfish, sea angel, sea walnut, and more. Research shows that these majestic beings play an important role in removing the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Scientists found one swarm of salps covering 100,000 square kilometers of the sea surface and consuming up to 74% of the carbon-containing plants on the surface per day. The salps’ waste is heavy and sinks and this particular swarm sent up to 4,000 tons of carbon daily to the seabed.
