In this two-part series, American volunteer firefighter Ryan McCully shares his near-death experience during emergency surgery. He describes encountering an ocean of souls, feeling profound peace, and watching his family in the hospital waiting room while outside his body. Ryan’s ordeal began with a medical emergency that appeared to involve spider bites in a couple of places, though the cause was never confirmed. He says tests ruled out other explanations. By the time he reached the hospital, he was near death, and doctors told him they could save his life through surgery. He agreed, was given medication to put him to sleep, and passed out.

I found myself in this other place. It definitely wasn’t here. It was basically the afterlife or a spiritual realm. I was definitely out of my body. There was an ocean in front of me. It was an ocean of souls. I could see all the souls that had ever lived, and they were just flowing in all directions. Curious, Ryan focused on one soul among the countless others— a woman who appeared to be in her late fifties, with wavy blonde hair. As soon as he looked at her, she turned, smiled, and nodded at him, seemingly aware of his attention. He sensed different levels or dimensions within that realm, including one bright place radiating peace and calm. He also felt a profound understanding that the pain, sorrow, and loss experienced on Earth were temporary parts of a much bigger picture in which everything was ultimately OK.

Eventually, Ryan found himself back at the hospital, still out of his body, watching over his family in the waiting room. He even tried joining a conversation between his girlfriend and his aunt, encouraging his girlfriend to follow his aunt’s advice— confident that, soul to soul, some part of them could hear him. Ryan says he didn’t remember that conversation right away. It resurfaced later, when his girlfriend raised the same concern she had discussed with his aunt, and he reminded her of his aunt’s advice. Her reaction surprised him.

And she said, “You can’t know that. You cannot know that conversation. You weren’t there.” And I was like, “Yeah, I was. What are you talking about? I was right there.” And she said, “No, no, you were in surgery. We had that conversation while you were in surgery, and we were in the waiting room.” And right then, it was like, boom, like a bell rang, and everything clicked, and I remembered that whole conversation. Ryan recalled the arrangement of the chairs, the location of the TV, and the room’s dim lighting. His girlfriend explained that the lights in half the waiting room had been turned off because his aunt had complained about them. He says the recollection was deeply meaningful to him and convinced his girlfriend that he had been outside his body.

In Part 2, Ryan looks back on his unusual return to his body and describes an encounter with his deceased grandmother that brought comfort to his grieving aunt.
