Here’s a tip on how to lift heavy items properly. Lifting correctly helps prevent compressing the spinal discs and straining your lower back, reducing the risk of injury and long-term damage to your spine. To lift safely, make a wide base of support with your feet shoulder-width apart and one foot slightly ahead. As you lower yourself, bend at your hips and knees only, keeping your back straight, chest out, and shoulders back while looking straight ahead to maintain good posture. Keep the load close to your body around belly-button level and lift slowly by straightening your hips and knees, not your back. Avoid twisting as you lift. When changing direction, use your feet and take small steps, leading with your hips and keeping your shoulders aligned. When setting the load down, do so carefully by squatting with your knees and hips only.
